Pick anybody and ask them to describe the business environment they are trying to navigate. You’re likely to hear words like “quicksand,” “earthquake” or comparisons to Hurricane Ike.

The truth is that you are going to hear a lot of metaphors to describe the business environment everyone is dealing with as best they can right now. Yet, no matter how the environment is described, all are saying the same thing—everything is shifting dramatically, they don’t know where it’s going and they’re not sure what they should do to respond.

Is business of certification immune? Not likely.

It’s time to do more that reflect on the question or wring one’s hands. It’s time really get into the question, consider some fundamental issues, make some decisions and get on the move forward.

On Wednesday, August 5, in Chicago, certification thought leaders will have an opportunity to come together to talk about whether the accepted certification value proposition really has shifted, and, if it has, which way it’s going and what they can and should do to respond. There will be some time to network and build relationships with peers who may very well be helpful navigating what’s coming.

The program is sponsored by the Certification Network Group (CNG). CNG was created almost 30 years ago by certification professionals committed to finding innovative solutions to the profession’s most formidable challenges through aggressive networking and truly breakthrough programs. Today, more than 500 certification professionals participant in the CNG.

While the networking opportunities, the quality of the programs, the fresh perspectives even on traditional topics, and the notoriety of speakers have been powerful fuel for the growth of CNG, there are a number of other compelling reasons why CNG has filled an important need in the certification arena. It’s free. It costs nothing to attend a meeting. There are no dues. There are no committees that one has to be part of. Actually, there are no requirements of any kind, except to come, get involved and bring a friend. That’s it.

For more than 30 years CNG has conducted quarterly programs in the Washington, DC metro area. In recent years, each meeting attracts more than 100, which is a great size for networking and learning from each other.  The virtual side of CNG (LinkedIn and other networking media) has grown our membership significantly in the Midwest and cities far from Washington. These programs have been so well received for so long, that CNG decided to offer an additional program in 2009 just for certification professionals in Chicago.

For this program, CNG is delighted that Judith Hale, Ph.D., CPT
ibstpi fellow, will facilitate what we are sure will be a lively, engaging, and certainly thought provoking and memorable discussion on certification’s value proposition. This is a program you will not want to miss.

Judith Hale certainly is no stranger to the certification arena. Hale is the author of The Performance Consultant’s Fieldbook 2nd Edition, Performance-Based Certification, Performance-Based Evaluation, and Performance-Based Management, and Outsourcing Training and Development. She has been a consultant to management in the public and private sectors for more than 25 years. Hale specializes in needs assessments, certification programs, evaluation protocols, and the implementation of major interventions. She is a past president of ISPI and ibstpi. She is the Director of Certification for ISPI. Hale was awarded a B.A. from The Ohio State University, a M.A. from Miami University, and a Ph.D. from Purdue University.

For this “first-ever” Chicago program, Hale will be facilitating an interactive program in which everybody will have an opportunity to participate and contribute. She will be “seeding” the discussion with some observations about the future of certification that those attending may have heard before. Be ready for that. But, all attending also will have an opportunity share their perspectives, experiences and challenges for others to hear. So, bring your questions and challenges to the discussion. In fact, you can offer some issues or questions you’d like covered. Just email them to CNG at the address below. Nothing will be more exciting for everyone than to see where the discussion goes.

This CNG program promises to be an exciting experience focused on a topic that could not be more timely and critical.

You will want to be part of this conversation. It’s the kind of conversation from which the entire profession will benefit.
