Working More Effectively with Your Board
Wednesday, March 21, 2007
Has governance got you down?
Do you sometimes think your board and volunteers are “out of control”?
What’s the most pressing problem you have in relation to your volunteers?
Looking for ways to improve the relationship?
Our next CNG meeting will focus on governance and how to make sure that volunteers are both “doing the right thing” and “doing the thing right.” The executive directors of two of the largest and most well-respected certifying organizations in the U.S. will discuss what they do to keep their boards’ focus on the issues that really matter. We all know that “strategy”, “mission”, and “vision” are what the board should be worrying about—but how do you get, and keep them there?
Bring your questions and problems to the March meeting because we’re allowing plenty of time for Q&A and group discussion following short remarks by these excellent speakers. And refreshments and plenty of time for networking with others members of the certification community, too!
- Jeanne Floyd, PhD, RN, CAE, is the Executive Director of the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). ANCC is the largest nurse credentialing center in the United States and offers multiple certification programs as well as other programs and services including the Magnet Recognition Program. Dr. Floyd is passionate about her work and her staff, and over the last five years has doubled ANCC’s budget and personnel. She staffs a 14-member board and oversees an extensive governance structure that also includes three commissions, three institutes, and advisors who are experts in international work and research. Head cheerleader for large volunteer-staff teams, Dr. Floyd appreciates that the organization could not function without the good will of these interested, enthusiastic supporters.
- Dale Cyr, MBA, CAE, is the Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director of ARDMS, the eminent credentialing organization for diagnostic medical ultrasound professionals with over 53,000 Active Registrants. ARDMS delivers approximately 20,000 computer-based examinations a year and offers four globally recognized credentials. ARDMS is accredited through ANSI (ISO 17024) and NCCA. The ARDMS Board adopted knowledge-based governance in 2000 (Tecker model) and developed and approved a strategic plan that is reviewed and updated every three years. During this time the functionality of the Board has improved exponentially with its focus on oversight through quality and development.
